The town of Vernal is located in northeastern Utah, near the Wyoming and Colorado state lines. It sits at an elevation of over 5,300 feet above sea level, on the northern edge of the Colorado Plateau.
The area's main attraction used to be the Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center but it has been closed indefinitely due to structural concerns. Dinosaur fossils can still be found by hiking a short distance from the visitor center, and some limited fossil displays have been set up at a temporary Visitor Center nearby. The visitor center is reached by following the signs north of Jensen, Utah, which is located 10 miles east of Vernal.
Hotels and motels in Vernal cater mainly to visitors of the Dinosaur National Monument and are all located along highway 40, which forms the town main street.
